Wanted: Directorial Talent for Horizon Film’s new Police Drama Series ‘Alpha 00’

Do you want to further develop as a director in suspense, action, and human drama? Then the new NTR talent development program is for you. NTR and Horizon Film are seeking six upcoming directors for the new high-end drama series ‘Alpha 00’. This series is created by Simon de Waal (known for ‘Hostage’ and ‘The Golden Hour’) and produced by Horizon Film on behalf of NTR and NPO. Michiel van Jaarsveld (‘The Year of Fortuyn’, ‘Van der Valk’) is the series’ showrunner and coach. The series will air in 2025 on NPO 3.

About the Series

‘Alpha 00’ follows a special team of police specialists who lead the most intense operations from a mobile command center at a critical crime scene. Each episode features a new, exciting case such as hostage situations, kidnappings, or terrorist threats. The series offers a revealing look at the most intense (fictional) police cases in the Netherlands, intertwined with an ongoing storyline about corruption and personal traumas.

Your Opportunity

NTR and Horizon Film offer six directors the opportunity to each direct a 42-minute episode, which will be shot starting December 2024. You will receive expert guidance from Michiel van Jaarsveld, and work alongside screenwriter Simon de Waal and his writing team consisting of Randy Oost and Yannick de Waal. Chafina Bendahman (producer of Rose Stories and Maya Creatives) will mentor you throughout the program. The program also includes workshops and inspiration sessions from renowned creators.

What We’re Looking For

We are seeking talented directors ready to take their next step in their career, to further develop their skills, and to gain experience by directing an episode of the police drama series Alpha 00.

  • We are looking for directors with a passion for the drama/crime genre, who have directed at least one audiovisual production that has been publicly shown, such as at a film festival, a public screening, or on television.

  • This opportunity is also aimed at directors accustomed to other genres but are eager to transition into drama/crime.

Eligibility Criteria for Directors

To qualify as a director, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Directorial Experience: You should have directed at least one (short) audiovisual production that has been publicly shown, for example, at a film festival, a public screening, or on television.

  • Interest and Affinity: You must have an interest in and affinity for the drama/crime genre, even if you have not yet had extensive experience in this genre.

Please note: If you have been the lead director on more than two fiction series, you are not eligible for this opportunity.

Upon applying, the director agrees to be available during the intended filming period and to be involved throughout the pre-production and post-production phases. Additionally, the director must agree to the Terms and Conditions of Alpha 00.

Schedule

  • September to December: script discussions, inspiration sessions, and pre-production.

  • December to March/April: shooting period.

  • March to June: post-production.

  • Announcement: By August 12th 2024, selected directors will be announced.

Selection Process

Based on the applications, a selection will be made of candidates who will be invited for an interview. To prepare, they will receive additional information, such as the series bible and the pilot script. Ultimately, six directors will be selected for the program.
